Wenqi Chen

Wenqi Chen is a children's book illustrator currently studying MA Children's Literature: Children's Book Illustration at Goldsmiths, University of London. She previously studied Fashion Design and Technology at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology before working in stage costume design and later moving into children's book illustration.

Her stories often begin with people and experiences she knows well. She enjoys observing people and everyday life, and is interested in how we respond to change, loss, fear and growth. Rather than searching for dramatic events, she prefers to begin with small, familiar moments and develop them into stories that feel honest, gentle and emotionally connected.

In her practice, Wenqi explores how visual storytelling can communicate emotion through composition, light, colour and atmosphere. She is particularly interested in how changing light, environments and pacing can become part of the narrative, allowing images to tell stories alongside, or sometimes without, words. She also enjoys experimenting with different book formats and playful ways of telling stories.

She hopes to create picture books that are warm, thoughtful and gently humorous, offering children and adults a space to observe, reflect and find their own emotional connections within a story.
